Introduction
Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers, France on the 15th of October 1926. From an early age he proved to be very academic receiving distinctions in his baccalaureat (leaving certificate equivalent) and it was hoped that he would follow his fathers footsteps, and become a medical practitioner. Foucault however rejected this profession and after World struggle II he was accepted into Ecole Normale Superieure where he studied doctrine and psychology. While studying at the Ecole, Foucault became acquainted with Louis Althusser, who introduced him to Marxist structuralism (Calhoun, Gerteis, Moody, Pfaff, Virk 185:2002) and who also recruited him to the French Communist Party in 1950-1953. He began lecturing psychology in the University of Lille but in 1954 grew degenerate of teaching and decided to leave France. He worked in Poland, Sweden, amongst former(a) countries and later returned to France in 1960 where he met his life partner Daniel Defert. He moved to Tunisia with Defert for two years and on his return to France in 1970 became professor of the fib of Systems of Thought to the College of France. Foucault was an avid writer, publishing more then 10 books some of which include The Birth of the Clinic 1963, Discipline and Punishment 1976, History of Sexuality Volume 1 1976, to name but a few.
